PURPLE and URBAN

FABIO is SO on a roll today!!! His second post in under 10 minutes: "Purple from Urban Outfitters." Looks like the 6th Ave x 14th street location to me... Sissy Pants, did you drag that poor man in there, and, pray tell, what did you buy? 4/30/08 5:45pm

PURPLE is fighting PLAID.

A fight along the 14th parallel. This particular purple plaid is a printed plaid... not woven into the cloth. Stussy makes this scribbly version of the Buffalo Check, which from the distance this picture was taken, looks convincingly authentic.[See Below] I believe this same sweatshirt is available in pink as well as electric blue, and white. 4/27/08

BLACK and RED and TOTALLY INSANE.

This capture was sent on Sunday Evening by FABIO (and I'm guessing SISSY PANTS was with him.) Captured at the Trader Joe's on 14th Street; I can't think of a more insane place on this earth than the Trader Joe's on 14th Street on a Sunday evening. Two words: HEART ATTACK, or better yet: MASSIVE CORONARY. The stress of that situation is more than our fragile nervous systems can bare. We tip our plaid caps you guys for braving the wilds and bringing us home a plaid with your groceries. Thanks you two!

GREEN and WHITE by Moonlight (well, that's a street lamp actually)

Not often do we include or solicit posed photos, but in this case, upon noticing a plaid collar peeking out from alias, RIP VAN WINKLE's hoodie, I could not resist, of course his identity has been masked by the addition of a pair of official PVP SUNGLASSES. Outside the Mercury Lounge after another stunning performance by Heloise & the Savoir Faire. 4/27/08 A little after 1am.

That GREEN and BLACK looks awfully familliar...

CAPTION: Bedford stop 1pm sat.
Sent in by SISSY PANTS, who obviously was in the obvious company of FABIO when he took a picture of the very same girl, but from another angle. See two posts previous for FABIO's capture.

RED and BLACK CROWS?

CAPTION: Did you get the rocker plaid?
Sent in by FABIO, I'm guessing this capture happened moments after the green and black capture, based on the context o the photographs we can trace his path from platform to train. The above subject looks to be of the common mid 90's rocker variety. A nice specimen indeed.

DETAIL FROM: MASSIMO VITALI's Pic-Nic Poker

*PLease Note:
With Pic Nic season rapidly approaching, there has some debate recently whether or not the standard red and white pic-nic blanket pattern is considered a plaid. Well, since we are in South Beach, FL for a few days, and since red and white pic-nic print is just about the only plaid down in these parts, we have decided that by Florida standards, Pic Nic Check is a plaid. TO BEAT A DEAD HORSE (or twins) TO DEATH...

Ok, so to risk devoting way too much attention to something that really isn't that funny, this last incarnation of the horrible batwing sweatshirt was sent in by CALL PAUL, who has uncovered the truth behind our Olsen twin sighting on Saturday. To read the full story, cut and paste the link below:

http://www.transworldnews.com/NewsStory.aspx?id=44155&cat=2

Caption included with CALL PAUL's submission:
"I wonder why there are fireworks? Maybe they just won a battle. It is weird that Batman has no shirt on and the Batwing has no pants on! That is why they are a team, I guess."

STRAIT TALK from LOVELY NAILS: The mystery is solved.

In reference to the mysterious midnight posting from LOVELY NAILS, she has provided us with the keys to the kingdom:

"The notorious batwing sweatshirt is back. We're proud to re-introduce the perfect workout sweatshirt for gym rats and muscle freaks. Face it, the way you're built, regular sweatshirts never fit right. But our batwing will. No more buying oversized sweatshirts that fit your shoulders and chest but balloon at your waist. The batwing cut gives you plenty of room for your musclebound torso and tapers at the waist so you're not swimming in excess fabric. Available in 8 bold prints."

ANNOUNCING A PVP NEW HIRE!

After a long drawn out search committee, and months of interviews, PVP is proud to announce that we have filled the position of PVP, NCRIP. (North Country Roving Intern Photographer) We are pleased to welcome PVP ALIAS: TEA BAG to the PVP Staff in the formentioned position. He will be providing us with regional photos of Vermont/New Hampshire/Connecticut River Valley Buffalo Plaid. This is primarily a field position, though he will be reporting back to Headquarters from time to time. If you see him in the Hall, please give a warm PVP welcome!

THIS IS JUST A TEST.

The above post is a snapshot of a picture on a computer screen taken off the blog of Emilie Wood (www.emilewood.com) of a photo she took at the Great Alaskan Lumberjack Show in Ketchikan, Alaska, May 22, 2007.

For more information regarding the Great Alaskan Lumberjack Show, please visit their website at: www.lumberjacksports.com

Hear at PVP Headquarters, we are testing out a new system of mobile uploading and chose this image as our OTI (Official Test Image. After significant technical difficulty, due to poor directions, this pix message was finally sent directly to the blog using the Picture and Video Messaging service from Verizon Wireless, which leaves a lot to be desired in terms of being user friendly. (Dear Steve Jobs, I will go to sleep tonight and dream of the iphone.)

IS there RIGHT way?

Awoke this morning to find this little gem in our inbox. Sent during the night by LOVELY NAILS (We have not heard back from her yet, as to the root of it's origin.) But it was tagged with this caption: "Finally a sweatshirt that fits the RIGHT way." It's early yet, and we are all still on our first cup of coffee, scratching our heads, trying to decipher the meaning behind LOVELY NAILS's cryptic message. Unable to make any sound conclusion, we decided to pour ourselves a second cup and turn the image over to the specialists in the PVP, IIRL (Image Information Research Lab) There was some speculation amongst PVP morning shifters, that perhaps the subject pictured is a distant relative of Paul Bunyan? More information forthcoming, as soon as we hear back frorm LOVELY NAILS, who may be sleeping in... Stay Tuned...

SHOES FOR KEVIE

Well folks, it's time again for everyone's favorite segment, PVP MAILBAG!!!!! Let's round out the work day by answering some of our fan mail, shall we? Today's letter comes from a long lost, but recently found, dear old friend, PVP ALIAS: TEA BAG, who worked with us back in 2001 when we were operating out of the back of a walk in refrigerator in a sweet little grocery store in Portland, Maine which no longer exists. [RIP, PGG]

TEA BAG caught us in a lie of sorts by asking for the text book difference between Gingham and Plaid. This is a question that frequently finds its way into our mailbag, and we try our best to scoot around it most of the time, except when we have no choice, so in response to TEA BAG"s inquiry we responded:

"Good question, the difference between plaid and gingham is the size of the check and the weight of the fabric, though it's not all together certain whether or not these are the official defining factors. At first, it was thought by some of us that was plaid was made up of one color and black and gingham was one color with white, but our PVP FVC (Fashion Vocabulary Consultant) who is a well respected authority in the fashion world has told us that it has nothing to do with color...."

Here is TEA BAG"S retort:

"I'd just like to point out that there is one picture of you [in the blog] in which you are definitely wearing gingham plaid."

Well TEA BAG, you snarky devil....WE STAND CORRECTED. And I hope you will accept this pair of hand painted Chuck Taylors as a small token of our appreciation in regards to your acute attention to detail in keeping us honest. Just send us a pair of shoes and we'll paint em. (Sorry, we can't provide the footwear, we're on a shoe-string budget, no pun intended. Ha ha ha.)

PVP Salutes Plaid Figure Head: PAUL BUNYAN

31 foot tall statue of Paul Bunyan (Though legend has it the actual man was 63 axe handles high, with his feet on the ground, head in the sky) in Bangor, Maine, one of at least a dozen towns claiming his alleged birthplace.

There is some debate in regarding the authenticity Mr Bunyan's tall tale. Skeptics claim that his story was the invention of the Red River Lumber Company, back in 1914, as a marketing stunt and corporate logo, where as some folks argue that the myth first emerged in 1906 as a compilation of genuine lumberjack legend.

Here at PVP, we have our own version of the story. According to a trusted and reliable source who's great grandfather knew the real Paul Bunyan from summers at Camp Cobbossee, on beautiful Lake Cobbosseecontee, in Winthrop, Maine, "Pauly B" was remembered to be, "A pretty big guy who liked pancakes."

A DAY IN THE LIFE... 4/20/08

Dear Readers,
As I'm sure you've all noticed, and despite our winter forcasting, the Spring '08 Season is proving to be very fruitful one indeed for plaid sightings. Due to record numbers of submissions, and after many heated board meetings, all of us at PVP Headquarters have agreed to try out a new format for compiling our daily postings... Instead of choosing one or two of the "best" images to post per day, (as is our usual habit.) And in order to more accurately represent the frequency of sightings, we are trying out a new grid layout. Unfortunately, this compromises the size of the image for the quantity of images blogged, a concept on which we are not competely sold, though we believe change is good, and at the very least, a learning experience, and can always be changed back. As always, we welcome your comments and suggestions.
Please email us at: plaidvoyeurismproject@gmail.com with all of your thoughts on this and all matters plaid.
Thanks.
Sincerely, PVP, WPC (Web Presence Correspondent)

RED and BLACK: Kickin' back....

Over the past few months we have been flooded with questions about what constitutes a PVP capture. Well, dear readers, today is you lucky day. We have decided to open up the floor to questions.... The first inquiry comes from a frequent contributer, code name: FABIO in from Brooklyn, NY. FABIO writes " Does it count if they ask me to take their picture?"
Well, FABIO, the answer to you question is: Yes. Infact, this is the first time we have had a subject volunteer, unknowingly to be a part of PVP. Bravo. We applaud your two faced voyeurism tactics. P.S. They must be in a band... Right? I'm guessing, from Brooklyn....No?

BLAZE ORANGE BUFFALO PLAID: The conversation continues......

Hey Abby,
I am definitely interested in the hand-painted plaid!! My plan is to send you a couple yards of blaze orange fleece, which after you paint, a lady I know will make into a jacket for him. Does that work out ok for you?
I also had a couple questions about the hand-painted plaid. Is the effect just like a regular buffalo plaid print? And is it machine washable?
I am so excited about finally getting my dad a blaze orange and black check coat!! Thank you so much!!
Anne

To Which I responded:

Hi Anne. I usually paint it on with fabric ink, so far I've only painted on smooth fabrics, so fleece might be a bit tricky, but I'm with some experimentation, I'm sure I can find something that will work. Yeah, it should be machine washable, though washing by hand might be better, anyway, I have attached a swatch of the handpainted plaid pattern, the check are about 1.5-2 inches square.
