Julian Schnabel in his early career, was considered by some to embody the stereotype of the Big Bad Boy painter of the 80’s, producing enormous paintings filled with vibrant colors and bold strokes. He also made big sculpture, big drawings, and big paintings, oh wait, I said that already. In the mid 1990s, Schnabel shifted his focus to film, big film. Receiving great acclaim for several successful major motion pictures, His most recent being The Diving Bell and the Butterfly. Released in 2007, the film has already heralded international honors, including Golden Globe for best director and best foreign language film, best director at the Cannes Film Festival in France, and Oscar nominations for achievement in directing and adapted screenplay. Whichever artistic avenue Mr. Schnabel chooses to pursue on a given day, he does it big in Buffalo Plaid. Photo by Jean- Baptiste Mondino
